New Orleans, Louisiana

We had the two loveliest tour guides in New Orleans (friends who moved here a year earlier), so this was one of the most fun cities yet.  They took us to a yummy Japanese tapas place, Yuki Izakaya, where we had a midnight snack of pork belly and egg ramen, and then to a space music (I honestly have no idea how else to describe it) show at a place called Always Lounge.  As most good evenings go, I was too busy having fun to take any pictures.  It was fun to be able to see a few places off the beaten path with them (no gumbo for dinner!!)  I do like to get into the spirit of the place we're visiting, but let me tell you, it's difficult to eat in downtown New Orleans if you're not in the mood for Creole cuisine.  (Here's a fun video of the Japanese place we visited, which I would definitely recommend:  http://youtu.be/h1bpTyDYQck)  That night, our friends put us up in their absolutely amazing apartment on Treme Street (where they film the HBO series), which had porches everywhere, a hidden garden out back, super-high ceilings, and the best bones of any house I've seen.  I would move to New Orleans in a heartbeat if we could have a house half as great as that one.

our friends' apartment walked out to that second-story porch

Here are a few photos from earlier that day...the usual buildings and such.  I found New Orleans to be very beautiful; I was expecting the entire city to be like the stories I'd heard from Bourbon Street, but it really was charming.  I appreciate that it's more organic and honest (i.e. dirty and messy...?) than most historic Southern cities.

First on the list in New Orleans:  find good hot chocolate (which we did, at this cafe:)

Other photos from our walk around the city:

We didn't get to go to this museum because it closed early, but next time!
