world cup watching

We love World Cup season.  Jon, because he lives for soccer.  Me, because it's a great reason to go out for food and drinks!  I use it as an excuse to visit all of the great places I've been wanting to try.  So the Rooks family, at least half the time, watches fútbol with style (the sports bar does win out every now and then...)

On Thursday we saw Uruguay just barely beat England at Jaleo with sparkling wine, a cheese plate with apricots, cinnamon toast, fig jam, and nut brittle, and a Spanish take on "pigs in a blanket", made with thin potato slices and chorizo.  Jaleo is one of my favorites; I'm waiting for the day we can get together a group big enough to take one of their foosball tables for dinner.

We saw France v. Honduras last Sunday at Soi 38, a great new Thai restaurant in the West End.  This place has amazing gold murals on the wall, all hand-painted.  And amazing massaman curry, the best we've found since we moved here (RIP Thai Lotus, scene of our first date and our favorite Thai food ever.)

During halftime of that same game we jumped up and moved over to Zengo to finish the game out.

Then, of course, the requisite few sports bars with friends, and one disastrous dim sum spot with a tiny television (but Jon was a good sport about it.)

Happy World Cup!

  1. The cheese plate at Jaleo is seriously the best thing ever. Sooo good.
